Effect of Milling Parameters on the Development of a Nanostructured FCC–TiNb15Mn Alloy via High-Energy Ball Milling

In this work, a blend of Ti, Nb, and Mn powders, with nominal composition 15 wt.% Mn, balanced Ti Nb wt.%, was selected to be mechanically alloyed by the following two alternative high-energy milling devices: vibratory 8000D mixer/mill® PM400 Retsch® planetary ball mill. Two ball-to-powder ratio (BPR) conditions (10:1 20:1) were applied, study evolution synthesized phases under each mechanical alloying conditions. The main findings observed include following: (1) sequence conversion evolved from raw elements transitory bcc-TiNbMn alloy, subsequently an fcc-TiNb15Mn independent conditions; (2) total full alloy only reached mill at minimum 12 h time, for either BPR employed; (3) produced non-negligible Fe contamination media, when highest time applied; (4) final presents nanocrystalline nature partial degree amorphization.
